A recent Jupiter Media Metrix study provided some interesting statistics:

  • 28% of US companies nominated opt-in email as the main tool that they planned to use next year to market their products online

  • 15% nominated instant messaging

  • Only 9% nominated banner advertising

  • Unsolicited email (spam) was a distant last at 3%

Clearly, email is becoming the online marketing tool of choice (with instant messaging the one to keep an eye on).

The reason for this is simple: permission-based email marketing works. Opt-in email campaigns leverage what is an existing cornerstone of business - relationships between stakeholders.

Opt-in email campaigns help to deepen existing relationships and keep the relationship "warm". The result being a positive impact on a company's bottom line.

new privacy laws

Important amendments to the Privacy Act 1988 come into effect on 21 December 2001.

In essence, this new law will require that organisations with an annual turnover of more than $3 million must notify their customers and stakeholders of what personal information about them they hold and how that information is used.
